CS02 → ComplexCon
Description ComplexCon reached out to see if Molloy would be interested in being invited to have a booth at ComplexCon as a rising designer and generously comping the entire cost of ($16,000) 10’x20’ booth. In order to build a team that could suffice a space of that size Sam contacted long-time colleague Justin Son of Esenes Worldwide to see if they could collaborate on the booth and new products.
Phase 1: Booth Build The approach for the booth was born from the aesthetic of “Cohabitation in a Post Civilization Environment.” This matched with both Caos Motē and Esenes’ design style of the juxtaposition of concrete and nature, eco-brutalism. The background was designed by making a collage of open source abandoned location images and passing this through Vizcom’s AI to create a cohesive large scale vinyl. Display and POS tables were made of plywood that were coated in cement and then sanded. Electrical wires were hung above to create the feel of telephone wires and a chain link fence to create a sense of depth between the midground and background.
Phase 2: Exclusive ProductsA typical approach at ComplexCon is to tease upcoming products or products you can only acquire at the event. First, by using a unique 3D printed filament that is part PLA and part wax, we made molds for solid silver cinder block pendants embellished with two sparkles. Second, Caos Motē and Esenes collaborated on a hat with over 5,000+ embroidered stitches around the skull and on the brim. The concept was a racing team that was stuck in traffic, dubbed Rush Hour Racing Team. A plight both New Yorkes and Los Angeles residents could both lament over. Motifs of both areas are highlighted on the hat showing a street light, San Francisco Muni lines, a palm tree, and the brim showing an intricate spaghetti junction.
